Diesel Bus Technician
Chicago, IL
Local Pay: $27-$37 per hour
Shift: 24/7 Shift, Most likely 2nd or 3rd shift with one weekend day.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Diagnose mechanical defects
• Carry out a preventive maintenance program
• Service and maintain brakes, air compressors, fuel systems, ignitions, HVAC systems and Wheel Chair lifts
• Inspect and repair buses per DOT requirements
• Keep records of time and materials used
• Communicate with Customer and Supervisor on any delays or additional repairs that may be needed
• Test drive buses to confirm completed repairs
• Use standard and specialized tools and garage equipment
•Work with minimal supervision and perform independent tasks based upon general direction
• Input service notes into service tracking system
• Planning for future service work including reviewing work orders and ordering parts from Parts Department
• Keep service truck stocked with commonly used parts to prevent delays in completing work orders
• Stay up to date on all yearly training requirements set by the OEM
• Strict observance of and adherence to all safety policies and procedures
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
• Diesel engine experience required; Medium duty bus experience, International Truck/Bus preferred
• Navistar, Cummins and Braun certifications are preferred
• Must have own set of tools (wrenches, ratchets, etc)
• Knowledge of the provisions of codes and laws relating to pupil transportation (i.e. IDOT inspections)
• CDL class B License with air brake endorsement preferred
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers
• Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Maintain a positive attitude
• Maintain a professional appearance
• Provide exemplary customer service
• Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion in a timely and safe manner
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance as attendance is an essential function of the position
• Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone
• Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions including extreme heat & cold, snow, and rain
• Must be able to work in confined spaces such as beneath vehicles • Must be able to bend, climb ladders, crawl, squat, kneel, reach and twist consistently
• Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs Apply
